The tree gets its name from the structure of its pods
(fruits), which are unusually twisted. The pods are strange-looking deformed
capsules made of five fibres tightly twisted together the shape of a screw. It
comes in a variety of lengths ranging from one inches to two and a half inches.
The plant is anticancer, hypolipidemic, antimicrobial, anti-plasmid,
cardiac antioxidant, anodyne, hepatoprotective, and anti-diarrheal.
The bark and fruits have traditionally been used to cure
diarrhoea, worm infestation, unpleasant sores in the ear, colic, flatulence,
& chronic dysentery. Diabetes is treated using the root bark. It works in
diabetes by increasing insulin sensitivity.
