BHILAWA- Indian marking nut

 

The Marking Nut Tree, also referred as Semecarpus anacardium, is a deciduous tree native to the Himalayan foothills. The tree was given the name "marking nut" because it was once used to mark clothing before they were washed.

Its fruit is 1-inch oblong fruit with a fleshy cup and a black and smooth surface. The juice of the fruit can be utilised to create a colour. The fruit resembles a cashew in that it has two parts: a delicious, edible upper piece and a smooth, black nut on the bottom.


Marking Nuts and Their Common Names

Semecarpus Anacardium is the botanical name for this plant.

Ekanayakam is the Tamil name for this plant.

Gujarati Name: Bhilamu, bhilamo English Name: Indian Marking Nut

Bhela, Bhelwa, Bhilawa, Bhilwa are all Hindi names for the same thing.
